The second Intifada lasted more than four years and cost more than four thousand lives. Middle East analysts predicted 2005 to be a breakthrough year for Palestine and indeed it seemed like the situation was bathed in the aura of good intentions and international atmosphere. However, things were far from optimistic on the ground. Israel withdrew from Gaza, but it was clear that the real power play in the region was all about the West Bank.
